I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker as well as a domestic violence survivor, both of which are equally important identities that informed the creation of this book. I've been employed in the world of social work since 2014 and freed myself from the abuse in 2018. Yes, that means I actively worked to support others who had pain inflicted upon them while being in pain myself. The irony does not go unnoticed, and yet it exemplifies the complexity of this thing we call domestic violence. I hope that my story and view on things helps all survivors, allies, family and friends understand and empathize with an experience that is so complicated, so deeply personal and so life-changing.

Hidden in the pages of this book is a model for understanding and giving ourselves compassion for what we endured and how we survived it.
